Generative AI on Campus: What we learned (students & teachers survey 2024)

Ongoing

Understanding the adoption and uses of AI by students and teachers.

In 2024, CEDE and LEARN ran a campus-wide survey to understand how students and faculty at EPFL perceive and use generative AI in education. As shown in our infographic, GenAI tools are already in widespread use across the campus. You can read the public news article and EPFL members can access the full reports of the student survey and the teacher survey

What stood out most was the strong interest from teachers in using GenAI to support student learning, aligning with a view of GenAI tools as an opportunity for pedagogical innovation. Yet despite this enthusiasm, actual use of GenAI to support learning remains limited.

Generative AI on Campus: What next

Our 2024 teacher survey showed a clear desire among faculty to use GenAI to support student learning, but also highlighted the need for targeted support to turn that ambition into practice.

We used the findings from both the student and teacher surveys to guide our support strategy. This includes helping teachers already interested in GenAI bridge the gap between intention and practice, and engaging those who remain hesitant.
