DEEP Development

With the goal of understanding the foundations, challenges, and impacts induced by the digitalization of teaching at the primary school level, and of promoting equitable and sustainable digital practices, the DEEP consortium, through its partners, leads collaborative research projects focused on the key themes of its missions.

EPFL contributes to two of these projects: one in collaboration with the University of Teacher Education of Schwyz (PHSZ), and the other in collaboration with the University of Teacher Education of St. Gallen (PHSG).

The DEEP DEVELOPMENT project is based on a collaboration between research and teaching staff, aiming to develop a continuing education program for teachers that is sustainable in a context of constantly evolving technologies.

As part of the DEEP consortium, the training program takes into account issues of accessibility and gender or belonging bias in its development, drawing on realities in the field and using unplugged methods.

The project is structured in two parts: The first part aims to assess the challenges and needs of teachers regarding digital education in primary schools. To this end, an online platform will soon be tested by around a hundred primary school teachers, in order to analyze their paths and study their interests as well as the obstacles encountered in their professional development.

The second part aims to co-construct a continuing education strategy for digital education in collaboration with teaching staff, with a focus on AI as an example of a rapidly evolving field. As part of this effort, activities adapted to address the topic of artificial intelligence in primary school have been developed using an unplugged approach.
